Symptoms of Poisoning that Often Occur

Symptoms of poisoning can be similar to other conditions such as seizures, excessive alcohol consumption, stroke, or side effects of insulin injections. Some common signs and symptoms of poisoning include:

  • Redness around the mouth and lips.
  • Breath smells like chemicals.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Abdominal pain and respiratory problems.
  • The body is weak and it is difficult to focus (dazed).
  • Restlessness, loss of appetite, and body shivering.
  • Headaches, difficulty swallowing food, and red rashes on the skin.
  • Loss of consciousness or fainting.

When to Take the Victim to the Hospital

It is important to take the victim to the hospital if they experience conditions such as unconsciousness, respiratory problems, seizures, or unresponsiveness. An overdose of drugs or alcohol also requires emergency medical attention.

Causes of Poisoning

Apart from drug overdoses, various other things can cause poisoning, such as:

  • Chemical cleaning agent.
  • Insect or pest control products.
  • Poisonous plants or mushrooms.
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Excess alcohol consumption.
  • Food poisoning that has not been cooked thoroughly.
  • Poisonous insect or animal bites.

2. Inhalation Poisoning

  • Keep victims away from toxic sources.
  • Take the victim to a place with clean air.
  • Watch for signs of serious poisoning.

3. Skin or Eye Poisoning

  • Remove contaminated clothing.
  • Wash the wound or rinse the eye with clean water for 15-20 minutes.

When medical personnel arrive, they can use various antidotes such as activated charcoal, antivenom, sedatives, ventilators, and antiepileptic drugs, depending on the type of poison and the victim’s condition.
