Why Are Women Vulnerable to Stress? 3 Causal Factors

Why are women vulnerable to stress? – Stress is the body’s response to demands or pressure from the environment. Although stress can be experienced by anyone, several studies show that women tend to experience stress more easily than men. There are several factors that cause women to be vulnerable to stress, including biological and psychological differences, the multiple roles they have to play, and relationship problems and violence. Prolonged stress can harm physical and mental health. Therefore, it is important for women to recognize the symptoms of stress and find the right way to deal with them.

Reasons why women are vulnerable to stress

In general, stress can happen to anyone, both men and women. However, research shows that women are more susceptible to stress than men. This is caused by several factors, including:

1. Biological differences

There are several biological differences between men and women that make women more susceptible to stress.

  •  Hormonal differences

Women have much higher amounts of the hormone estrogen than men. This hormone is associated with changes in mood and emotions. Hormonal fluctuations that occur during the menstrual cycle can also affect mood and make women more easily stressed.

  • Male and female brains

Research shows there are differences in the structure and function of the brains of men and women. For example, the amygdala which plays a greater role in emotions in women. This makes women tend to react more emotionally to stress. Women are also better at empathy and reading other people’s emotions, which can trigger stress.

  • Respons stres

When stressed, women’s bodies produce the hormones cortisol and adrenaline in greater amounts than men. This hormone triggers the “fight or flight” reaction. High levels of this stress hormone make it easier for women to feel depressed and overwhelmed by stressors.

Psychological differences

Psychologically, there are several differences between men and women that make women vulnerable to stress.

  • Emotional differences

Women tend to be more sensitive to emotions than men. Women are also more open in expressing their emotions. This tendency makes women more easily feel depressed when facing emotional problems.

  • Personality differences

Women generally have more neurotic and anxious personalities than men. This makes women more susceptible to chronic stress. Women also tend to be more perfectionistic, which can lead to stress if high standards are not met.

  • Coping differences

Women tend to use emotional coping strategies, such as emotional ventilation, social support, or rumination (thinking about problems repeatedly). Meanwhile, men use more problem-focused coping, such as planning solutions. Women’s emotional coping is less effective in reducing stress.

  • Double role

Women often have to take on dual roles, namely the role at work and the role of housekeeper. These demands can be especially hard on women.

In the workplace, women are required to be able to work as well as men. They have to chase targets, work overtime, have meetings, and all the pressure to achieve. Meanwhile at home, women still have to take care of children, cook, clean the house, wash, and so on.

The demands of this dual role can be physically and mentally exhausting. Especially if the husband does not help with household matters. Stress is inevitable. Women can feel very tired and even depressed facing the pressures of work and household at the same time.

Therefore, it is important for women to ask their husbands or other family members for help in managing the household. Fair distribution of roles will really help reduce the double burden borne by women.

Relationship problems

Women experience stress more easily in their interpersonal relationships. This includes conflicts with partners, children, and in-laws.

  • Conflict with partner

Women often carry a greater emotional burden in relationships. They tend to be more sensitive to problems in relationships and more easily irritated. This can trigger conflict and tension with your partner. Women are also more likely to feel depressed if their partners are less supportive.

  • Conflict with children

As mothers, women have an important role in raising children. The pressure to fulfill the expectations of the mother’s role and care for children can trigger stress. Conflict with a child who behaves badly or is defiant can also affect the mother’s emotional well-being.

  • Conflict with in-laws

Married women often have to adapt to expectations and pressure from their in-laws. Differences of opinion about childcare or household issues can trigger conflicts with in-laws. This can cause additional stress for women.

  •  Violence and harassment

Women experience violence and harassment in various forms more often than men. One of the most common is domestic violence (KDRT). Data shows that around 1 in 3 women in the world have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner. The perpetrators of domestic violence against women are generally husbands or male partners.

Domestic violence puts women in constant fear and psychological pressure. Trauma and its long-term impacts can trigger various mental health problems in women, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders.

Apart from domestic violence, another form of harassment and violence that many women experience is sexual harassment. Sexual harassment can occur at work, on the streets, on public transportation, and even in your own neighborhood. Sexual harassment, although not always in the form of physical violence, can still cause psychological trauma for the victim.

How to Cope with Stress in Women

Regular exercise can help reduce stress in women. Exercising releases endorphins which make you feel happy and relaxed. Exercise also helps improve mood and sleep quality.

  • Meditation is also effective for reducing stress. Meditation helps calm the mind and body. Some types of meditation that can be practiced are mindfulness meditation, breath meditation, and feet meditation.

  • Social support from family and friends is also important. Sharing stories and problems with those closest to you can help reduce the burden on your mind.

  • Therapies such as counseling or cognitive behavioral therapy can also help overcome stress-causing problems. Therapists can provide guidance and solutions for dealing with stress.
